Three Little Pigs

Important Dates and Events

Valentine's Day- Our Valentine's Day party will take place on Tuesday, February 14th.  I sent a note home on Friday will all of the details and a class list for valentines.  Please let me know if you didn't get the note!

100th Day- We will celebrate the 100th day of school on Friday, February 17th.  In honor of this day, we are asking kids to dress up like they are 100 years old!

Homework- There is no homework poem this week.  Our monthly family project was sent home on Friday.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Reading Group Books- There will be no reading group books sent home this week.  Instead, we will read, practice and perform a Reader's Theater for our classmates.  Your child should bring this home on Monday or Tuesday.  Please help your child practice reading his or her part fluently and with expression.  Once your child masters their own part, please help them read the parts of the other characters.  Thanks so much for your support with this fun project!

What We are Learning…

Thematic Big Book/Shared Reading: This week our theme is the story of the Three Little Pigs.  We will read the story, learn new vocabulary words, answer text dependent questions, compare different stories and write an alternate ending.
Phonics:  We will work on handwriting, letter sounds and using letters and sounds to spell and read words.  This week we will focus on word families:  ap, ad and ag.
Sight Words: do, we
Writing: This week we will continue work in our journals.  We will practice writing stories about real events.  We will also work on our Three Little Pigs writing craft.
Math: This week we will continue work to solve story problems.  I want students to picture the problem in their head so they can gain a real, concrete understanding of what they are learning. The most important thing is for students do develop strategies for problem solving.
Science: We had a great time learning about Force and Motion last week.  We experimented by sliding a hockey puck across, carpet, rubber and tile.  Please ask your child which one worked best and why!  This week, we will continue to talk about force and motion, will will discuss why the Big Bad Wolf could not blow all three houses down, and we will conduct an experiment to test whether objects will slide or roll down a ramp and why.

Snacks-  We are slightly low on snacks.  The kids love fruit snacks.  I also have a small fridge in my room if you want to bring something like cheese sticks, carrot sticks or sliced apples.  Popcorn is also usually a big hit with the kids.  Please just remember we are a peanut and tree nut free classroom.  Thanks!

Lexia-
Lexia is a great way for your child to practice literacy skills at home! I would love to see your child spend at least 15 minutes working on Lexia each evening. If you have not started using Lexia at home, you will need your child's student ID and my email- jmelnyk@interact.ccsd.net.
